Coppell Boys Golf’s Varsity Black team captured the Argyle Invitational on Wednesday at Champions Circle Golf Club in Fort Worth, posting a team score of 305 to finish six strokes ahead of Keller Timber Creek.

Sophomore Rishi Bapna led the Cowboys with a 1-under-par 70, finishing second individually. Bapna closed with a 3-under 32 on the back nine and made four birdies over his final nine holes.

Bapna entered the fall with postseason experience already behind him. As a freshman last spring, he helped Coppell finish second at the District 5-6A Championship and advance to the Region I Tournament. He shot 74 and 76 at regionals as Coppell tied for fourth.

Hayes Shanks added a 77 to finish seventh, Ethan Khera shot 78 and Ryan Walker carded an 80. Walker is back with the golf program this season after taking last year off, and his 80 provided Coppell’s fourth counting score.

Junior Jack Wilmington rounded out the lineup with an 85. Wilmington is also a multi-sport athlete at Coppell, playing for the Cowboys’ JV Red baseball team last spring.

The 305 also provides an early indication of Coppell’s depth. Last spring, the Cowboys’ postseason varsity lineup shot 306 and 299 at district before rounds of 298 and 299 at the Region I Tournament. Those scores came on different courses and under different conditions, but Wednesday’s round put the Varsity Black group in a similar scoring range early in the season.

Coppell’s winning lineup was made up entirely of underclassmen. Bapna and Shanks are sophomores, while Khera, Walker and Wilmington are juniors.

Coppell Varsity Black returns to competition Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the Luna Vista Invitational at Luna Vista Golf Club. Tee time is scheduled for 8 a.m.
