Coppell looked sharp and in control for much of the afternoon on January 2, but a tough stretch in the middle of the third quarter and a dramatic finish allowed Frisco Wakeland to escape with a 68–65 win in a nail-biter.
The Cowboys came out confident and aggressive, moving the ball well and attacking the paint to build early momentum. Coppell scored 17 points in both the first and second quarters, matching Wakeland step for step heading into halftime.
That rhythm stalled midway through the third quarter as Wakeland went on a run fueled by transition opportunities and timely shots. Coppell managed 14 points in the period, but the Wolverines used the stretch to take a narrow edge into the fourth.
Coppell responded with grit down the stretch. The Cowboys battled back in the final minutes, forcing turnovers and generating quality looks while keeping the game within one possession. Coppell was excellent at the free-throw line, converting 19 of 20 attempts on the night.
In the closing moments, Wakeland capitalized on the stripe and connected on late, momentum-shifting shots, including a buzzer-beater that ultimately sealed the outcome. Coppell had chances until the final seconds, but Wakeland’s late execution proved just enough.
Sebastian Peña led Coppell with 23 points, shooting efficiently from the field. Robert Watson added 14 points, while Isaiah Fleming finished with 12. The Cowboys also showed strong ball movement throughout the game, recording 13 assists.
While the result stung, Coppell showed poise, fight, and growth against a quality opponent and will look to build on that performance as district play continues.
Final Score:
Wakeland 68, Coppell 65
