Competition Experience is Driving Force for Coppell Cross Country

The Flower Mound Invitational venue was moved from Lake Park in Lewisville to Shadow Ridge Middle school on Saturday, October 3. The 5K rolling course was an extended version of the 2 mile course teams ran in September. Top runners from Flower Mound and Marcus were absent from the lineup on Saturday. Aside from Caswell’s absence, Coppell’s top runners were on the course using competition experience to progress toward program goals.

The Varsity women clinched 2nd place behind a very strong Highland Park team. Senior Morgan Colon led the way with a fourth place finish and a time of 19 minutes, 10.6 seconds. She was closely followed by teammate Chloe Hassman (7th, 19:17). Next in for Coppell were Natalie Fleming (13th, 19:57), Louisa Ehinger (16th, 20:12), Alexa Turati (18th, 20:21), Reezon Eke (19th, 20:28), and Hanna Noyola (20th, 20:30).

The Varsity men finished with a score of 26, easily taking 1st place. Senior Rith Bhattacharyya won the mens race with a time of 16:01.9. Andrew Mullen (2nd, 16:14) ran with Rith the majority of the race. Colin Proctor (5th, 16:33), Kavin Chengavarayan (7th, 16:45), and Blaine Warner (11th, 17:02) rounded out the scoring runners.

The JV women placed 4th overall as a team. Freshman Ashlyn Wilbanks led the girls, she placed 15th overall with a time of 21:17. Catherine Navarro Gutierrez (22:58), Daniela Chavarria (23:12), Jeana Sheurich, and Saakshi Barve were the five top finishers for Coppell.

The JV men remain undefeated with a team score of 16 this week. Sophomore Ashan Habeeb led Coppell with a 1st place finish in a time of 17 minutes and 29.1 seconds. Five more Coppell athletes placed in the top ten; Dylan Newsome (2nd, 17:38), Nicolas Martinez (3rd, 17:50), Jeevan Janeev (4th, 17:52), Alfred Fairchild (6th, 18:01), and Jorge Retana (7th, 18:11).

The team is still developing. Each week a different athlete steps up to impact competition results and team morale. From a spectator’s prospective the season is ramping up to be very exciting. Next on the schedule is the Marcus Invitational at North Lakes Park in Denton on Saturday, October 10
