LUBBOCK, Texas | October 26, 2026. Rainy conditions did little to slow Coppell Cross Country on Monday morning as the Cowboys and Cowgirls competed at the UIL Region I-6A Championships in Lubbock. Both teams delivered competitive performances against some of the strongest programs in West and North Texas, with seniors Maya Easterwood and Sidharth Kerthipati earning individual berths to the UIL State Cross Country Championships.
Easterwood led the Cowgirls with a fifth-place finish in the girls' 5,000-meter race, clocking 17:55.0. Kerthipati paced the Cowboys, finishing 19th in the boys' race with a time of **15:52.4.
Coppell's boys finished eighth in the regional team standings, while the girls placed 14th. Although neither team advanced collectively, the performances of Easterwood and Kerthipati ensured that Coppell will be represented in both state championship races.
For Easterwood, the regional race continued an impressive postseason run. Just two weeks earlier, she captured the District 7-6A individual championship in 18:44. Her performance in Lubbock was nearly 49 seconds faster, moving her into the top five of a highly competitive regional field.
The girls' race featured a strong showing from Flower Mound, which claimed the top two individual positions. Adeline Bennett won in 17:31.3, followed by teammate Liana Cluley-Garza in 17:34.5. Easterwood crossed the line just 23.7 seconds behind the regional champion, earning her place among the region's leading distance runners.
The Cowgirls also received a strong contribution from sophomore Finleigh Sanders-Burk, who finished 43rd in 19:21.3. Sophomore Rachel Stumm finished 95th in 20:26.8, contributing to Coppell's team effort.
On the boys' side, Kerthipati built on his runner-up finish at the District 7-6A Championships, where he helped lead Coppell to the district team title. He ran 16:04 at district before improving to 15:52.4 at regionals, an improvement of approximately 12 seconds.
Kerthipati's 19th-place finish was especially meaningful in a field that featured numerous state-ranked programs and runners. Denton Guyer's Ruel Newberry won the boys' race in 14:35.5, followed by El Paso Eastwood's Noah Garcia in 14:48.5.
Senior Diego Morales was Coppell's next finisher, placing 41st in 16:17.6. Senior Tanish Neelapu followed in 71st at 16:36.2, with junior Itsuki Pena finishing 75th in 16:38.2. Sophomore Alesh Khowala placed 84th in 16:47.8, while junior Sam Meier finished 95th in 16:53.2 and junior Abishek Suresh took 100th in 17:02.7.
The Cowboys' eighth-place team finish followed their District 7-6A championship performance, where five Coppell runners placed among the top 10. Competing at the regional level provided a different challenge, with a deeper field and demanding weather conditions testing the team's consistency.
For both programs, Monday's meet was a reminder of the difficulty of advancing through the Texas high school cross country postseason. Strong individual performances must be paired with depth across an entire lineup to compete for team qualification, particularly in a region featuring several established distance-running programs.
Despite falling short of advancing as teams, Coppell's season will continue with two athletes who have demonstrated consistency when the stakes have been highest.
Easterwood enters the state meet following a district championship and a top-five regional finish. Kerthipati advances after leading the Cowboys to a district team title and placing among the region's top 20 runners.
Next up: Easterwood and Kerthipati will represent Coppell at the UIL Class 6A State Cross Country Championships on Friday, November 6, at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. The girls' race begins at 8:15 a.m., followed by the boys' race at 8:45 a.m.
