Coppell softball closed out its season Friday night with a competitive effort before Marcus pulled away late for a 7-1 win.

The game stayed within reach for much of the night. Marcus scored two runs in the second, but the Cowgirls answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to make it 2-1. From there, Coppell continued to battle and kept the game close into the sixth before the Marauders broke it open with a five-run inning.

Coppell finished with five hits on the night, with Cecilia Bourque scoring the team’s lone run as part of a 1-for-3 performance. Courtney Hargrove and Abbie Pison also collected hits, with Pison driving in Coppell’s only RBI. Madison Scott added a walk as the Cowgirls kept pressure on throughout the game.

In the circle, Lena Gay gave Coppell a strong start, throwing 1.1 scoreless innings. S. Stephens carried the bulk of the work from there, and despite the final score, the Cowgirls stayed in the fight until the late Marcus surge.

The loss dropped Coppell to 12-18-1 on the season and brought the year to a close. Even in defeat, Friday’s game showed the fight the Cowgirls continued to bring, hanging tough with Marcus deep into the game before the decisive sixth inning.

For the question about when they last played this well, honestly, not that long ago. This was one of their better all-around efforts compared to the Flower Mound loss, and it was closer in feel than the final score suggests. Their 5-2 win over Little Elm and 4-2 win over Braswell were cleaner results, but in terms of competing deep into a game against a stronger opponent, this was one of their better performances late in the season.
