Girls Wrestling Tough Fight for Second Place

Cowgirls took on the biggest and toughest girls meet at Texas Women's Classic on December 8-9. The event hosted nearly 50 teams, including multiple state champions from 5A and 6A. Both JV and Varsity girls wrestled hard in grueling matches, with some varsity girls wrestling almost eight matches. Small mistakes cost the Cowgirls team points slipping them from a first place finish. Confidence grows knowing that Coppell girl wrestlers gaining momentum against long-standing champs in the state. Coppell finished with 152 points, underneath current 6A state champions Allen at 181 points. Strongest showing seen in years with four varsity girls reaching the semi-finals. Senior team captains Ava Payne 120 and Karissa Godhia 138 place fourth. Piper Carrell almost secures bronze against Lake Highlands but loses in overtime. Julie Rodriguez Sr. 165 falls to current Allen state champ Jasmine Robinson in the semis and places fourth; Annie Lopez Jr. 185 loses a tough match to district opponent in semis and finishes fourth as well. Cassie Bonacci Sr. 145 secures fifth place. Coppell went into second day of competing leading in team points ahead of Allen. Coppell finishes ahead of other current 6A state champs El Paso Eastwood, and multiple district and region opponents. JV action included Emma Pehl So. 165 wins her category with 5 wins. Elizabeth Cummings Fr. 120 reaches finals but falls short. Fiona Erb Fr. 132 reaches finals for the first time in her JV category and finishes with silver.
