On the cold Thursday night of January 5, Cowboys soccer looked to win their first game in the NTX Elite Showcase against the Harlan High School eagles from San Antonio. This was going to be an interesting matchup for the Cowboys seeing as the Hawks fell just short of winning state last year. The game started off slow as the players looked to get a feel for the game and began to try and understand the Hawks playstyle, but ten minutes in the Cowboys were given a penalty kick in favor after junior forward Gareth Meza was fouled just inside the 18 yard box. Looking to score his 5th goal of the season Junior forward Srikar Mulukutla went up to take the penalty kick, but sadly it was stopped by the keeper keeping the score tied 0-0 through the end of the first half. The Cowboys came into the second half with the intent to solidify their win against the Hawks, with many promising chances by Sophomore forward Luis Mendes. But the keeper for the Harlan Hawks was truly a wall. Then went the end of regular time which ended in 0-0, leading the game to penalty kicks to decide a winner. Going up to take the Cowboy kicks were senior midfielder Ryder Brock, senior defender Preston Taylor, junior midfielder Sam Stone, junior defender Chaz Null, junior forward Srikar Muluktla, and in goal we had junior goalkeeper Jacob Campbell. With poise senior midfielder Ryder Brock went up to take the first kick, but sadly it was saved by the keeper. As the first player for the Hawks stepped up to take the kick, goalkeeper Jacob Campbell stayed calm and made a great first save diving left. Up next for the cowboys was defender Preston Taylor, as he stepped up he was able to slot the ball in the bottom left hand corner. The next kick taken by the Hawks was also saved by Jacob Campbell making the score 1-0. Midfielder Sam Stone looked to score the second goal against the Hawks but the shot was saved by the goalkeeper. Now, Defender Chaz Null was up to shoot, and with control he was able to put the ball past the keeper in the right-hand side of the net making the score 2-0. The next shot taken by the Hawks resulted in a goal bringing the score to 2-1. As the last penalty taker Srikar Mulukutla lined up against the keeper to face him once again, he put the ball in the net with power and confidence making the score 3-1 ending the game in that instant. A truly remarkable performance by Srikar Mulukutla and the Coppell Cowboys, leading them to their first regular season win and their first win of the tournament. Jacob Campbell had 4 penalty saves to help win the game.
