LEWISVILLE – After a Texas snowstorm forced the rescheduling of the Regional Meet from February 4th and 5th to February 7th and 8th the Coppell swim team met at the Lewisville ISD Westside Aquatic Center and began warm-up to compete in the Class 6A Region 2 Championship Meet.

By the end of the preliminaries, Coppell saw all 4 relay teams, two boy’s teams and two girl’s teams advance to the finals for day two in the 200 Medley Relay and the 400 Freestyle Relay events. The swimmers, Nalini Agnihotri, Annie Chang, Bella Malick and Katy Jost swam a solid 1:53.44 placing 9th in the Region for the Relay.

The same team of girls also swam to a 6th place position in our Region in the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:40.46 and a new record for 2022! The boy’s Medley also advanced to the finals placing 4th and creating a new school record of 1:36.48. The boys, Arjun Baindur, Nathan Lim, Jonathan Ting and Sean Li. Another team of boys, Jonathan Ting, William Li, Nathan Kim, and Sean Li went on later in the meet to place 9th in the Region with at time of 3:16.62.

The next event for the Cowboys was Event 8 Boys 50 Freestyle in which Sophomore Sean Li grabbed 7th place in the Region with a time of 21.79. The 50 freestyle is an exciting race in which the time differential between 1st and 8th place can be as tight as it was in this case 1.46 seconds. Sean’s nearest competitor was 0.02 hundredths of a second ahead of him. Needless to say, these races are exciting with very close finishes. As a Sophomore Sean Li is poised to advance significantly In the next two years.

Event 10, 1 meter Diving was the next event in which Yassin Helaly dove to 8th place in the finals with a score of 355.30. This unfortunately was not enough to carry Yassin on to the State Championships this year yet it still represents an accomplishment after weeks out in his recovery from a broken foot mid-season.

Our next CHS swimmer was Nathan Kim who took on the 100-yard Butterfly in Event 12 and made it look graceful and easy. Nathan finished 7th in the finals with a 51.40 which was not quite enough to get to the State Champions this year but was only 2.4 seconds away from the top region swimmer. This junior is in an excellent position to make his mark next year.

Up next was Katy Jost swimming and showing tremendous endurance in the Girls 500 Freestyle. After swimming to a second-place finish in prelims with a 5:01.96 once in the Finals Katy turned things up a notch and swam to a first-place finish with a 5:00.99. With this place and time Katy will move on to the 6A State Championships. This is also a new school record for the Girls 500 Free for Katy.

Event 18 Boys 200 Freestyle relay made it to the B Finals placing 13th in the Region with a time of 1:32:47. This team was comprised of Nathan Kim, Asher Johnson, Justin Chang, and Amav Khambete at the anchor position.
Our next Cowboy, Michael Zhao took on the boys 100-yard Backstroke finishing 12th in the B- Final with a time off 55.91. Next Annie Chang swam in Event 21 in the girls 100-yard Breaststroke, placing 10th in the B-Final with a time of 1:07.34.

The next event was the 100-yard Breastroke. This event is exciting to watch with two very strong CHS Breaststroke swimmers who never disappoint if you want to see a well fought contest. In this event Sean Li and Nathan Lim went head-to-head in their attempt to qualify for the State Championship. After a hard-fought race in the finals Sean Li was able to secure 2nd place with a time of 58.08. Nathan Lim came in 3rd with a time of 58.17. With this final result in the event Sean Li qualified for the State Championship.

To sum all of this up the Coppell Cowboys put on a great performance at the 6A Region 2 Championships with two top swimmers moving on to the State Contest in Austin. Katy Jost and Sean Li will enter prelims and compete beginning on February 18th. Way to go Cowboys!!

The Regional Results combined team scores placed 9th in the Region with a score of 212. The Girl’s score was 71 placing them 12th in the Region. Lastly, the Boy’s score was 141 placing them 8th .
