Coppell Swim & Dive traded traditional competition for some fun Friday afternoon, welcoming students, families, teachers and friends to the Vaquero Battle at the Coppell YMCA.

Instead of a typical meet, every race was open to everyone. Participants competed alongside Coppell swimmers in a variety of events, with the belly flop contest, cannonball contest and a relay featuring students pushing duck inflatables among the afternoon's favorites.

Sanavi Kulkarni took home the belly flop contest title, while Coppell teachers got involved in the action as well. Teachers competed in both the belly flop and cannonball contests, with Mr. Smeda winning the cannonball competition.

The Vaquero Battle was designed as a fun community event rather than an official competition, so race times were not published. The afternoon gave Coppell Swim & Dive an opportunity to bring its school community into the pool and share the sport in a much different setting than a traditional meet.

Next up, Coppell Swim & Dive travels to Arlington on Tuesday, Oct. 6, for the Arlington Lamar Invitational. Competition begins at 5 p.m. at the Arlington ISD Athletic Center.
